I really like Shanghai’s music scene. One of my favorite things about it is that there are so many women playing shows/running stuff! Below are a few little nuggets related to Shanghai’s underground scene:

  • A lot of my favorite electronic artists/DJs from the city were written up by Dazed a few weeks ago.
  • There’s a really innovative community-run radio station (Shanghai Community Radio) that puts on events and broadcasts DJ sets with wild green screen visuals twice a week over a live-streaming app called Bilibili.
  • A recent episode of the Cursed with Good Ideas podcast has an interesting interview with Katy from Shanghai Community Radio about what it’s like to do DIY art/music in China and thoughts on how people become art spies for the government.
  • This little 15-minute documentary will help you understand the electronic music scene as well as trendy Taobao fashion.
  • Here’s an article about club culture in China that does a really good job explaining the nuances of it across different parts of the country.
